William Wrigley continued to made important acquisitions during the off season. Pitcher Pat Malone, second baseman Freddie Maguire, and out fielder Kiki Cuyler joined the team. Sparky Adams went to Pittsburgh, Riggs Stephenson moved from third base to left field and Clyde Beck moved from second to third. Woody became the lead-off hitter and held that position for three years. The line-up looked like this:

Woody and the team continued to improve. Woody played in 116 games (19 more than his rookie season) and improved his batting average to .299. He had 22 doubles, 4 triples, 2 home runs and 30 bases on balls. The Cubs improved their record by 6 more wins and ended up third behind the St. Louis Cardinals and only 4 games back. Hack Wilson had 31 home runs which was tied for league leader with Jim Bottomly of the Cardinals. Rookie pitcher Pat Malone led the team with 18 victories against 13 defeats, and with a very respectable 2.84 ERA.
